Treprostinil (Xretten®)
Description
Xretten is a medication used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, which is a type of high blood pressure in the lungs that affects heart function.
Xretten works by causing the blood vessels in the lungs to relax, resulting in a decrease in pressure and improvement in heart function.
How It Is Administered
Xretten is available as a tablet in the following four strengths:
white 0.125mg tablet
green 0.25mg tablet
yellow 1mg tablet, and
pink 2.5mg tablet
Xretten is given either two times per day or three times per day. Medication typically starts at
0.125 mg two or three times a day and is increased by 0.125mg every 2-4 weeks as long as
there are no side effects. There is no known upper dose limit.
This medication should always be given with food.
These tablets should be swallowed whole; do not crush, split, or chew. If a dose is missed,
student should take the missed dose with food as soon as possible.
Side Effects
Headache
Diarrhea
Nausea
Flushing
Pain in jaw
Pain in arm(s) and/or leg(s)
Abdominal discomfort
Students may always have very mild side effects, such as mild flushing or loose stools. If
symptoms of side effects are severe, or if you are concerned about any other side effects that
the student might be having, contact the student’s parents or emergency contact person.
Additional Information
These tablet shell is not digested, so the tablet shell can be seen in the stool (bowel movement).
This is normal.
Loperamide/Imodium can be used for diarrhea and Tylenol for headache.
